The new regulations around calf disbudding are now in place, all calves require pain relief.
The SWVS FarmPlus team provide a high welfare service. We use sedation, local anaesthetic (to numb horn bud) and anti-inflammatory (longer acting) pain relief. After the horn buds have been cauterised an antiseptic spray is applied. Calves can be tagged, blood/DNA tested and checked for extra teats all at the same time.
We recommend calves are debudded between 2-6 weeks of age, this ensures the horn bud is completely removed with minimal damage to surrounding tissue.
