One of the key features of the Carterton premises is a large animal facility. This caters mainly for horses, but also alpacas, goats, pigs and sheep.
We are now able to perform many procedures which will mean less large animals having to be referred to Massey for treatment. As Katie Grant one of our Equine Vets states “We will now be able to admit them, put them on fluids and monitor them, even if they require intensive care. Horses that require extensive box rest can utilise our new facility. We have yards and boxes and the ability to confine safely.
We have an in-house lab, where we can run all the blood tests and get results back in half an hour. In the past, we’ve had to wait anywhere between 12 and 24 hours for the results. We take a swab and culture it ourselves. It’s just a lot more efficient and in the long-term costs less because we can now start the correct treatment right away.
